Transition Instructions

Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.

Days 1-2 75% 25%
Days 3-4 50% 50%

FAQ

Why should I buy veterinary diets from Chewy?

We offer competitive prices and free shipping on orders over $49. Plus, you'll save more if you sign up for automatic refills with Autoship at Checkout. Chewy experts are available 24/7 to answer any questions you have.

How do I order veterinary diets?

  1. Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
  2. At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
  3. Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.

I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?

Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.

Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?

Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.

Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?

Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.

Do authorizations expire?

Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.

Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.

What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?

Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

    Urinary Canned Food

By Rachel on Sep 18, 2021

I purchased what my cat's Vet prescribed. The first week went really well. Both my cats took to the canned food. However, after about a week or so, they quickly lost interest. Meal time used to be fun and they would get all excited for their meal. I need to get that back! The Vet did say that the prescription dry food would be fine and I can get other canned food that's not prescription. I don't think I can return the remaining case of 24 that I have. I already broke the other case of 24 so I have been trying to give it to the outdoor cats but they are not interested.

    Great taste

By Meikiberry on Nov 5, 2021

Who knew a stray gray and white kitten would turned into the sweetest cat everybody loves. He loves his c/d cat food. He devours it every time. He loves the seafood kind to. So I buy 1 case of each flavor.

    Good Grief

By MiniMe on Oct 31, 2021

if I could only get my little booger to EAT this stuff we would be half a mile further down the road. She just scrunches her nose at it slurps the liquid from the can and pitter putters off into the court yard.

    My cats love it!

By Cindy on Sep 19, 2021

The cats love it. It's enough to fill them up. I feed it twice a day along with the dry. Between both I haven't had a problem with either of my mae cats. Definitely recommend it to others especially those who have male cats that need a special diet.

    Picky cat actually eats this!

By chrizee on Oct 13, 2021

My purrsnickety eater Lemmy actually eats this! And I love that it is in smaller cans so I'm wasting less if I don't use all of the can in a couple of days.

So happy the vet recommended this product!

By Ambika on Jul 7, 2021

I'm so happy that I was introduced to this food for my cat. He had a urinary blockage and went into acute kidney failure earlier this year, and the vet recommended switching to this food. Ever since, he's had so much more energy and has been seeming to be much healthier overall. I wish I knew earlier that cats were so sensitive to dry food! Also, shoutout to Chewy for being so awesome and prompt with their customer service, and for sending an adorable handwritten card for my cat's birthday. Such an adorable, personal touch!

    My cat actually likes it!

By Kate on Sep 5, 2021

My cat was becoming bored with his previous prescription food, and I was having to throw a lot away. So I switched to the stew flavor, and he actually likes it! I will be ordering more.

    Great formula but tiny cans

By Jill on Jul 23, 2021

Before you purchase this, please notice that you're buying 2.9 oz cans. For my 17 lb guy, he will go through this in about 4 to 5 days! They do make other urinary recipes in the 5.5 oz cans for only about 14 dollars more for the case. Not sure why this one is so expensive, but my cat does like it.

    Good stuff!!

By DLKL on Jun 14, 2021

I'm so very grateful for this product. This is the ONLY wet food that Radar will eat. I have yet to encounter any UTI's with him since I started (per vet's advice) him on this product. The other three cats, one girl and two boys, are on another Science Diet wet food and the boys are also staying 'crystal'-free.
